Women And Power, 2023, A2 limited edition print (edition of 50)
This work is part of an ongoing narrative series paying homage to the great women writers and artists who inspire me. It includes references to contemporary artists such as Jenny Saville and Geraldine Swayne (featured on the cover of ROSA: Review of Sussex Art).
Influential texts, including Linda Nochlin’s Women Artists and Diana Souhami’s No Modernism Without Lesbians, inform the imagery. Symbolically, the pomegranates evoke mortality, while the plums allude to the sexualised nature of female physicality.
The title draws from Mary Beard’s manifesto Women and Power, which examines the cultural underpinnings of misogyny and the public voice of women, while Margaret Atwood’s Bluebeard’s Egg underpins the work with reflections on the pitfalls of heterosexual relationships under patriarchy.
Produced using archival pigment inks and museum grade digital fine art paper, this print is made in England by a Hahnemuhle Certified Studio and Fine Art Trade Guild approved printer. It comes with a certificate of authenticity and is approved, signed and titled along the bottom edge by the artist.
