This work includes portraits of two early twentieth-century lesbian artist icons: Romaine Brooks (portrayed on a postcard in top hat and gloves) and Gluck (featured on the cover of the groundbreaking Queer British Art catalogue, Tate).
Alice Neel is referenced as one of the most prominent and singular women portraitists of the last century, alongside contemporary artists Flora Yukhnovic and Jennifer Packer.
The work also engages with Barkley Hendricks and Vanessa Bell - both important influences known for their use of colour, paint application and ability to capture the spirit of their times through figurative painting.
