This self portrait captures a candid moment before a summer swim at Ohope Beach, New Zealand, painted from a photograph taken by my mother. The scene reflects not only a landscape of freedom and possibility but also the intergenerational bond between women.
The coast, which I have visited for four decades, represents the inheritance of place, creativity and curiosity passed from my mother to me. The beach towel’s pattern and the native pōhutukawa trees sparked the composition, but the painting also honours shared intergenerational connection.
