    IN YOUR FACE, Salisbury Arts Centre, Sept 2017


    I have a self portrait in this exhibition of queer artists' versions of themselves at the Salisbury Arts Centre, opening September 23rd.

    This exhibition explores differing approaches to portraying a sense of self and interpreting identity and sexuality. It coincides with this year’s 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act, the landmark moment when private homosexual acts between men over 21 in England and Wales were decriminalised in 1967.

    Featured artists include Sadie Lee (Curator), Matthew Stradling, Roxana Halls, Sarah Jane Moon, David Gwinnut, Michael Petry, Sunil Gupta, Charan Singh, Jason Ford, Sarah Pucill, Richard Sawdon Smith, Annie Attridge, Atalanta Kernick and Anka Dabrowska.

    This exhibition contains nudity.

    Exhibition Opening on Saturday 23 September from 2pm - 4pm, show continues until 4th November.

    Director Lois Norman's feature film documentary 'She is Juiced' will premier at the Tate Britain this Saturday 24th June as part of the Queer & Now Festival to open Pride in London 2017.

    The film follows the practices of four LGBTQI artists: Sarah Jane Moon, Ope Lori, Peta Lilly & Jo Hay and explores notions of the female gaze through practice and politics.

    Next month (May 13th - 20th) I am running a 6 day painting course in rural France with a small group of students. There is a place left for one participant (or two sharing a room, non painting partners welcome).

    The course will be taught over six days and will include opportunities to paint in the nearby villages as well as scope to wander and draw. We will focus mainly on the spectacular landscape near Cote Grange, which boasts views of leafy valleys and abandoned picturesque villages.

    My portrait of Julia Bell, a writer & senior lecturer at Birkbeck, will be on display along with 16 other paintings in 'The Art of Reading', an exhibition focusing on the joys of reading.

    The painting is set in the Keynes Library at the Birkbeck School of Arts which is the building previously occupied by Vanessa & Virginia Stevens (later Virginia Woolf) and so it is fitting that Julia is pictured with a beautiful copy of Woolf's 'To The Lighthouse'.

    The exhibition will initially be on display in Bloomsbury at the Gower St Waterstones (82 Gower St, London, WC1E 6EQ) from Thursday 3rd November to Wednesday 30th November.

    One-day workshop with Sarah Jane Moon.

    A graduate of The Heatherley School of Fine Art Portraiture Diploma and 2013 recipient of the Bulldog Bursary, Sarah Jane Moon often uses photographs for reference in her fabulously anecdotal portraits of friends and acquaintances.

    In this workshop she highlights some of the things to be aware of in using photographs to paint from and helps participants think about and realise the construction of a narrative portrait sketch in oils.

    SCHEDULE:

    10am Introduction & set up, things to note when working from photos
    11am Sketching composition in sketchbook / on support
    12 noon lunch
    1pm Painting in broad colours, big brushes
    2pm Refining, drawing, highlights
    3.30pm Critique & discussion


    WHAT TO BRING:

    A sketchbook, pencil / pen, your choice of oils*, palette, support (board or canvas of any size), brushes, rags / paper towel.

    Clear photographs of the subject you wish to paint (ideally set up in the environment you would like to paint them in and with any background anecdote such as postcards etc included and in good light). Close ups for clarity. Any postcards, images etc you would like to include (these may have personal significance to the sitter).

    Sarah Jane will bring a selection of photographs and other visual material to choose from if you have nothing specific in mind.

  • MOTHERHOOD EXHIBITION //


    I have work in the Lots Road Group's first exhibition 'Motherhood' that opens this week and runs until Mother's Day at the end of March.

    Motherhood is a Chelsea portrait exhibition and book that celebrates mothers, grandmothers and mothers-in-law.

    The exhibition features 16 portraits by figurative artists who met when studying portraiture at The Heatherley School of Fine Art in Lots Road.

    Very pleased to have had work accepted for exhibition in the 2014 Lynn Painter Stainers Prize that opens this coming week.

    'The Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize was created in 2005 by the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers and the Lynn Foundation to encourage the very best creative representational painting and promote the skill of draftsmanship.     Art Review: Sarah Jane Moon

    The current recipient of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters' Bulldog Bursary, Sarah Jane Moon, only became an artist in recent years, after arriving in the UK from her native New Zealand (via Japan, Australia and Malaysia). Taking a Diploma in Portrait Painting at the Heatherley School of Fine Art, where many of the tutors come direct from the Slade, trained her in a traditional manner, with focus being placed on perspective, drawing, and studies from life. Even before her course was over, though, Moon was beginning to rebel, and, in working from a photograph, she flouted the rules, but, at the same time, discovered a freedom which allowed her to see the resulting work more as a whole, with equal focus on objects behind the figure, rather than just as a sketch of the figure itself. For Moon, a portrait is about much more than just the head and shoulders of the sitter: it's about the whole body, its posture, its location, and the belongings which hold significance for this person, speaking of his or her interests and concerns... read more

    'The bursary aims to develop the talent of an artist at an early stage in their career.   • *Royal Society of Portrait Painters Exhibition - May 2011*


    I'm pleased to share that my portrait titled 'Rachel and Eleanor and Alice' will be exhibited in the 2011 Royal Society of Portrait Painters show, alongside paintings by some of Britain's leading portrait artists.

    The exhibition hosts commissioned portraits of celebrities and major public figures completed throughout the year by members of the society, as well as outstanding work by non-members, selected through the open submission.

    This year's exhibition will be on display at the Mall Galleries near Trafalgar Square between 5 and 20 May 2011. I'd be delighted if you're able to come along!
